What is CoolSculpting?

Affiliated Dermtology - CoolSculpting

The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise.

The CoolSculpting procedure is proven, safe, and effective. Get wow results and love how your clothes fit better, feel better, and look better. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting—so you’ll look great from every angle. The CoolSculpting procedure can help both women and men get rid of those stubborn bulges for good. The non-invasive treatment works on those pesky love handles that nobody really loves and even that double chin you see in the mirror every morning.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

Years ago, scientists at Harvard University observed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. The scientists—Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD—realized that the popsicles were freezing and eliminating small pockets of fat cells. The idea that cold can target fat cells—without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue—was the insight behind Cryolipolysis®, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based. The CoolSculpting procedure safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. Treated fat cells are crystalized (frozen), then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.

Many of us have stubborn fat despite diet and exercise.
CoolSculpting technology uses controlled cooling to target and kill only these fat cells.
In the weeks to follow, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates dead cells.
CoolSculpting results are long term, because treated fat cells are gone for good. Fat cells that are frozen during the CoolSculpting procedure gradually die off and leave the body through the body’s natural elimination process. That’s why the results are long-term. The fat is gone for good! Untreated areas will have no change in fat cell distribution.

CoolSculpting vs. Kybella

Kybella is one of the most well-known, minimally invasive treatments for fat removal. So, what’s the difference between Kybella and CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is non-invasive because the procedure does not involve injections or similar techniques. Kybella is categorized as minimally invasive because it is administered via injection.

Whereas Kybella is most often recommended for submental fat or fat underneath the chin, CoolSculpting can be used in many areas of the body. Both are highly effective, generally low-risk fat removal treatments that can help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Depending on your specific needs, one or the other may be ideal.

Fat Cells After The CoolSculpting Procedure

The CoolSculpting fat-freezing procedure actually reduces the number of fat cells in treated areas by about 20% to 25%. These fat cells are naturally processed and eliminated, so they won’t migrate to another area of your body. And, unlike what happens with other procedures, there’s no change to fat cells in untreated areas.

What Does CoolSculpting Feel Like?

As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you’ll feel some pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within 5 to 10 minutes during treatment. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their CoolSculpting treatment. After the treatment, you may feel some tingling as the area is massaged for 2 or 3 minutes. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities following their appointment.

During Your First Visit

You’ll meet with one of Affiliated Dermatology’s CoolSculpting clinicians during a one-on-one consultation. Our CoolSculpting clinicians have specialized training in the CoolSculpting procedure and will take the time to discuss a holistic approach to your goals for reshaping your body. Together, you’ll look at your whole body from different angles—and then focus on specific areas where you want to eliminate fat.

Your CoolSculpting clinician will work with you on the best treatment plan tailored to your needs. It may take as little as one office visit to achieve your goals. With different applicators to choose from, your clinician can design a treatment plan that can give you your desired results.

What Does CoolSculpting Look Like

For some people, a customized treatment plan may include more than one CoolSculpting treatment. For example, you may want freeze away fat from your inner and/or outer thighs—and also get rid of that muffin top.

Fat Freezing Treatment Area

Your physician will provide a clinical recommendation of which areas should be treated and how many treatments you will need. The result? The sculpted shape you want.

How many sessions is the procedure, and what are they like?

Each treatment takes about 35-45 minutes, and your total number of treatments depends on your desired results. Most of our patients describe the feeling as a gentle tugging, sometimes with a tingling sensation (like when your fingers get very cold on a winter day). During your session, the fat and skin of the target area will be carefully suctioned between the CoolSculpting applicators. The applicators will then start cooling the area, destroying the fat cells.

Afterward, a quick massage helps to support optimal results.

The number of sessions needed for CoolSculpting is largely determined by the target area, as well as each patient’s specific goals. However, on average, most CoolSculpting patients undergo between one and three sessions per target area.

How Long Does CoolSculpting Last?

CoolSculpting destroys the targeted fat cells, so those specific cells are permanently gone. After being flushed from the body, the fat cells that were eliminated via the CoolSculpting procedure will not return.

In fact, a 2016 study followed up with individuals that underwent CoolSculpting, checking in with them at the 6- and 9-year marks. The CoolSculpting results remained clearly visible, even years later.

It’s important to understand that CoolSculpting eradicates existing fat cells, but it cannot prevent new fat cells from appearing. So, suppose an individual gains a significant amount of weight after CoolSculpting, or adopts a diet/lifestyle that is not ideal. In that case, those unwanted fat stores can replenish. A healthy lifestyle is one of the best ways to maintain the results of CoolSculpting for many years to come.

Feel Confident in the Safety of CoolSculpting Technology

  1. Thank you for all the information about CoolSculpting. I have been trying to get rid of some fat around my body, but nothing I’m doing seems to be working. That is really nice that the fat cells that are frozen during CoolSculpting will gradually die off and leave for good. This sounds like a really great option!

  2. I didn’t realize that people are usually able to return to normal activities after a coolsculpting appointment. Coolsculpting is something both my wife and I are interested in. We are exercising quite regularly, but getting rid of that extra fat is proving difficult and coolsculpting might be able to help us out. https://altaireclinic.com/services/coolsculpting/

  3. I have been thinking about doing coolsculpting and it is cool how it is noninvasive. I think that the procedure is also awesome how you freeze away fat. When I do it, I’ll be sure to prepare for the intense cold.

  4. Coolsculpting is a very special kind of fat-reduction treatment. It is a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. This treatment has no downtime. That’s why it is also known as ‘spot fat loss’ treatment. This treatment causes the fat cells to die over time in the treated area. You can’t use this treatment as an alternative to weight loss. Coolsculpting- https://www.revivmedspa.com/procedures/#coolsculpting is capable of providing very natural results. The best thing about Coolsculpting is → it does not require any incision.
