[00:00:09] and affiliated dermatology talking about

[00:00:13] acne up we all hate it but coming up the

[00:00:16] doctor will break down what to look for

[00:00:17] and all right all new at 8:00 does teen

[00:00:23] acne mean better grades this is a

[00:00:26] question a recent study from Emory

[00:00:28] University asked and the results were

[00:00:30] kinda surprising yeah listen to this

[00:00:32] they found that teenagers who have acne

[00:00:34] all right often have higher grades in

[00:00:37] English math and science and then they

[00:00:40] earn more money later in life

[00:00:42] that's a silver-lining rate little

[00:00:45] encouragement that it's okay if your

[00:00:47] teen does suffer from acne there are a

[00:00:49] lot of options out there to help clean

[00:00:51] up their face and clean up their skin so

[00:00:53] Aaron T is live this morning at

[00:00:54] affiliated dermatology and Scottsdale

[00:00:58] explained this good morning guys yeah

[00:01:02] we're talking about acne we've all dealt

[00:01:05] with it most of us either as teens or

[00:01:07] even as adults and you mentioned that

[00:01:09] new study with Emory University showing

[00:01:11] a correlation with teens who have acne

[00:01:14] but also being great students and I want

[00:01:16] to bring in dr. man way to give us shed

[00:01:18] a little light on this situation tell us

[00:01:21] a little bit about there is there a

[00:01:22] correlation or what have you seen in

[00:01:24] teens that have acne and their

[00:01:25] personality yeah that's very interesting

[00:01:27] I've only recently heard about this

[00:01:29] study but it makes sense to me because a

[00:01:31] lot of my patients with pretty bad acne

[00:01:33] can be a little bit more introverted a

[00:01:35] little bit less social things like that

[00:01:37] so I mean it makes sense that they might

[00:01:39] spend a little bit more time studying in

[00:01:41] the books and really when you do improve

[00:01:44] a lot of these kids acne their

[00:01:46] confidence improves it can be really

[00:01:47] pretty life-changing as far as their

[00:01:49] social sphere goes that yeah it's pretty

[00:01:51] interesting study but there is a way to

[00:01:53] treat it we'll get to that in just a

[00:01:55] moment but first talk about are there

[00:01:57] different types of acne that we should

[00:01:58] be able to you know recognize yeah so

[00:02:01] the two main categories of acne that I

[00:02:04] really like to kind of educate patients

[00:02:05] on is mainly this inflammatory type of

[00:02:08] acne and like the more mild or non

[00:02:10] inflammatory type of acne and that being

[00:02:12] the inflammatory kind is gonna be more

[00:02:14] red angry tender like more of cystic

[00:02:17] nodules that sometimes people patients

[00:02:19] get that's a little bit more of a severe

[00:02:21] form that in my mind definitely means a

[00:02:23] lot more of a treatment in the office

[00:02:25] here and you know I being able to

[00:02:28] prescribe prescription products being

[00:02:30] able to get them under control the more

[00:02:31] mild type like blackheads and stuff like

[00:02:33] that can sometimes be just treated with

[00:02:36] the over-the-counter stuff okay and

[00:02:37] speaking of treatment let's go ahead and

[00:02:39] walk us through some of these different

[00:02:40] products that you have and what exactly

[00:02:42] they would be best for yeah so I just

[00:02:44] have like a couple of really good like

[00:02:46] gentle cleansers here I really like that

[00:02:47] survey product in particular it's just

[00:02:49] something hard not harsh or drying

[00:02:51] because a lot of the prescriptions and

[00:02:53] products that we do recommend can really

[00:02:54] irritate peel the skin cause a little

[00:02:56] bit of redness in which case you just

[00:02:59] want to use something gentle some you

[00:03:01] know in conjunction with that another

[00:03:02] one that I really like are these benzoyl

[00:03:04] peroxide ones it's pretty much more than

[00:03:06] the only two over-the-counter products

[00:03:08] that I usually recommend because it's

[00:03:09] pretty effective not as harsh for drying

[00:03:12] your irritative as some of the other

[00:03:13] stuff that's out there I can really

[00:03:15] benefit kids especially with which only

[00:03:17] like a mild case of acne what generally

[00:03:20] causes acne when we're talking about the

[00:03:22] more serious cases the inflammatory type

[00:03:25] I mean it's it's it's one it's a mix of

[00:03:26] genetics hormones is a big huge player

[00:03:30] when it comes to acne development stress

[00:03:32] can really flare people up of course and

[00:03:35] yeah just you want to be have a good

[00:03:38] skin care regimen you know it's you've

[00:03:40] only definitely cleanse your face at

[00:03:41] least twice a day and yeah avoid having

[00:03:45] like oil and sweat and dirt kind of sit

[00:03:47] on it for too long that can really

[00:03:48] exacerbate some people all right so

[00:03:51] speaking of stress parents out there you

[00:03:53] may want to lay off the teens sometimes

[00:03:55] because like you mentioned just briefly

[00:03:57] stress can cause this acne

[00:04:00] yeah and in particularly we China we

[00:04:02] kind of like to emphasize to parents

[00:04:04] maybe take a step back let the like the

[00:04:07] teen or the your child take like the the

[00:04:09] forefront of their care and really they

[00:04:13] tend to be a little bit more motivated

[00:04:14] whenever they don't feel like they're

[00:04:15] being constantly nagged and kind of like

[00:04:17] Oh what did you do this did you do this

[00:04:19] today whenever they feel like it's their

[00:04:22] responsibility and somebody they

[00:04:23] sometimes are doing

[00:04:24] a little bit better rather than like oh

[00:04:25] you got to watch my face again and that

[00:04:27] kind of stuff you know alright thank you

[00:04:29] so much doctor all right guys we'll send

[00:04:31] it back to you in the studio hey Aaron a

[00:04:33] we're all discussing like skin we all

[00:04:36] have kids right and tweens here soon

[00:04:38] what what great sunblock is good for a

[00:04:41] tween because a lot of those are for

[00:04:43] adults aren't they

[00:04:44] okay so they're wondering what type of

[00:04:47] sunblock sun protection is best for

[00:04:50] teens is there are in are there specific

[00:04:52] type kinds that are best for adults not

[00:04:54] specifically teens first adults in my

[00:04:56] mind but definitely all these products

[00:04:58] that we usually prescribed or recommend

[00:05:00] can cause sun light sensitivity more

[00:05:02] susceptibility to like sunburn and

[00:05:04] things like that so definitely at least

[00:05:06] want to have like a moisturizer on board

[00:05:07] with like an SPF of 30 or high or

[00:05:09] especially during the day

[00:05:11] I prefer chemical or mineral sunscreens

[00:05:14] the mineral ones are a little bit more

[00:05:16] able to block the Rays a little bit

[00:05:18] better but they tend to be a little bit

[00:05:20] more tinted and like kind of paste

[00:05:22] people out so anything as long as you

[00:05:24] know as long as the kid is willing to

[00:05:26] wear it in my mind is gonna be the best

[00:05:27] sunscreen for him all right the key

[00:05:29] there is just protection protect your

[00:05:31] skin but also think about switching up

[00:05:33] your skincare regimen in different

[00:05:35] seasons so with that I'll send it back

[00:05:37] to you guys Erin a thank you for that we

[00:05:40] are full at my house we're full-on into

[00:05:42] this well so Kennedy spends a lot of

[00:05:47] time well both the kids spent a lot of

[00:05:48] time outside because they're basically

[00:05:49] played baseball and softball so Kennedy

[00:05:52] uses Neutrogena but she also washes her

[00:05:55] face and uses a moisturizer now even at

[00:05:58] eleven twelve years old that's the Queen

[00:06:00] yes because there's she spent so much

[00:06:02] time outside so she uses CeraVe and well

[00:06:05] if you guys right and and the nice thing

[00:06:09] about survey is it's you know created by

[00:06:12] dermatologists but it's over-the-counter

[00:06:13] yeah it's not gonna be like you know

[00:06:16] going to Dillard's or Macy's out getting

[00:06:18] they're not a giant thing yeah

[00:06:20] fast the one that she that never touched

[00:06:22] the elta MD and I just went to need it's

[00:06:25] like the fourth dermatologist to

[00:06:26] recommend that one and tip or yeah I

[00:06:30] mean that one's a little bit pricier

[00:06:31] Walmart calm liver to you yeah no there

[00:06:40] was some good stuff on that table yeah

[00:06:41] the question if pimples will help you

[00:06:44] get paid later we just let them have

[00:06:52] there's something science their

[00:06:54] relationship not correlation right yeah

[00:06:57] they're more stressed because they're

[00:06:59] dealing with all that
