  • Protector solar, protector solar, protector solar y protector solar.

Video transcript: Skin Care for Men's Health Month

Watch the source video on YouTube

[00:00:02] June it is designated as men's health month and for men in Arizona it's an especially

[00:00:08] good time to talk about skin cancer the most common form of cancer in the United States

[00:00:13] and ladies we know it is not always easy to get our guys in to see a doctor so here

[00:00:18] to help us is dr. Dustin Mullins from affiliated dermatology great to have you here

[00:00:23] I want to first start out talking about skin cancer and some of those common

[00:00:27] skin conditions that men face absolutely so skin cancer is the most common form of

[00:00:32] cancer in the United States by far and away.

[00:00:34] It actually tallies more than all our cancers combined.

[00:00:38] So it's a common cancer and we need to be conscientious and aware that it's something that

[00:00:44] we can prevent with appropriate precautions and prevention measures.

[00:00:49] That's right.

[00:00:50] And you were saying that skin conditions are very, very common in men.

[00:00:53] Absolutely.

[00:00:54] So for men, we do see that they have an increased risk of sun exposure, whether it's environmentally

[00:01:00] through their occupation or whether it's exposure to allergens, environmental factors that

[00:01:06] can exacerbate their skin conditions.

[00:01:08] Dry skin is a real common thing for all individuals out here in Arizona, especially the

[00:01:13] month of June.

[00:01:14] The month of June is actually the least humid month of all the months in the calendar year,

[00:01:20] so it's the time of year where the temperatures are rising and the humidity is low, so our

[00:01:24] skin gets dry.

[00:01:25] That's right, and we are of course hitting those excessive heat warnings already.

[00:01:29] The summer heat also leads to a lot of excessive sweating for men and I know you all offer

[00:01:33] a treatment for that.

[00:01:34] Yes, it does.

[00:01:35] So excessive sweating can sometimes be burdensome or it can disrupt their daily activities.

[00:01:40] And when it starts disrupting your daily activity, that's when we start to recommend intervening.

[00:01:45] Whether that's with an oral therapy, a topical, or we can also offer an injectable Botox

[00:01:51] into the axula under the arms where they have the sweating.

[00:01:54] What that does is it clamps down on the sweat glands, so they're no longer sweating inappropriately

[00:01:59] and it's no longer affecting their daily activity.

[00:02:01] And you said that's a quick treatment.

[00:02:02] It is a quick treatment.

[00:02:03] It's a safe and effective therapy for it.

[00:02:06] Sometimes patients see that as more ideal

[00:02:09] because it's not going to be something

[00:02:10] they're taking a pill and exposing their body

[00:02:13] through something systemically.

[00:02:14] It's easy.

[00:02:15] You come in for a treatment and that's it.

[00:02:17] Yeah, and those topicals can get cumbersome as well

[00:02:19] having you do that day after day.

[00:02:21] All right, Dr. Mullins, help us encourage our guys

[00:02:24] to get in to see you or a doctor for a skin check.

[00:02:27] So, you know, always try to encourage guys and women

[00:02:32] to come in and get their skin check.

[00:02:33] It's an important thing,

[00:02:34] but June's Men's Health Month,

[00:02:35] so we're gonna talk about guys.

[00:02:37] So ladies, try to get your man to come in

[00:02:39] and get a skin checked.

[00:02:41] It's a once a year, we recommend everybody

[00:02:43] gets a full body skin examination.

[00:02:45] That's where we look over,

[00:02:46] look for anything it looks abnormal.

[00:02:48] We might investigate it further with a biopsy

[00:02:50] if there's any concerning features,

[00:02:52] but it's a good idea to get a baseline.

[00:02:54] Therefore, we can monitor you

[00:02:55] over the next periodic of years,

[00:02:57] to make sure that we're keeping an eye on any changes

[00:03:00] and catching anything early.

[00:03:01] All right, and on a monthly basis,

[00:03:02] you were saying this to me, I love this.

[00:03:04] You said, okay, bear down and check your guy.

[00:03:07] Stand there and look over his body

[00:03:09] because we're looking for specific things.

[00:03:11] We're gonna show two examples.

[00:03:13] Let's start with non-cancerous lumps and lumps.

[00:03:17] Exactly, like you said, we recommend once a month,

[00:03:19] you and your partner can do a quick checkover,

[00:03:22] look for any new, concerning spots.

[00:03:24] So anything is rough, pink, and scaly,

[00:03:25] that's not healing, like you typically,

[00:03:27] You typically expect the pimple or a cut, say three to four weeks, it should be healed.

[00:03:31] Anything beyond that, then we start asking what could it be, could it be a skin cancer?

[00:03:35] If it's pigmented, so like this picture right here, so it can be dark brown, black, multiple

[00:03:40] colors.

[00:03:41] That's cancerous.

[00:03:42] So if it's got, this is right here is a melanoma.

[00:03:44] That's the most lethal form of skin cancers.

[00:03:46] That's going to more commonly affects men than women.

[00:03:50] So for guys, this is an important thing that we need to be aware of, that we're at higher

[00:03:54] risk than females for melanoma.

[00:03:56] we have a higher mortality with it when we do have a melanoma.

[00:04:00] Right, and so if we do notice a lesion or something on our body, immediately go in, correct?

[00:04:06] So what we recommend, anytime you have a new pigmented lesion, anything that's new, make

[00:04:09] note of that, we want you to bring that up on your next full body skin examination with your dermatologist.

[00:04:14] If there's anything that you believe is concerning about it, in any way, we recommend you come in for a spot check.

[00:04:20] So we take a peek at that, and we evaluate that and make sure that there's either something we need to be looking at further or do nothing and monitor.

[00:04:26] All right, so once a year, do that skin check.

[00:04:28] At least once a year, sometimes more frequent

[00:04:31] based on their history.

[00:04:32] If they've got a skin cancer, it might be more frequent

[00:04:35] or personal or family history.

[00:04:36] All right, Dr. Mullins is gonna come after you

[00:04:38] if you don't get in and get your skin checked, okay?

[00:04:40] All right, thank you so much, great advice.

[00:04:42] Here's a special offer for you this morning
