Dra. [00:00:01] October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

[00:00:03] and with the attention being focused on

[00:00:05] detection and prevention one local

[00:00:07] dermatologist is hoping the same goes

[00:00:09] for skin checks

[00:00:10] studies have shown there is an increased

[00:00:13] risk for survivors developing melanoma

[00:00:15] Fox 10's Danielle Miller joins us live

[00:00:18] to explain this connection interesting

[00:00:21] John and Christina it absolutely is now

[00:00:24] the International Journal of cancer

[00:00:25] saying that breast cancer survivors are

[00:00:28] 16% more likely to develop melanoma than

[00:00:32] a woman who may not have had breast

[00:00:33] cancer now this local dermatologist is

[00:00:36] hoping that women make it a habit to

[00:00:38] schedule that full-body exam when they

[00:00:40] do schedule those mammograms dr.

[00:00:44] Christine Lin with affiliated

[00:00:46] dermatology is hoping to raise awareness

[00:00:48] for skin checks especially for breast

[00:00:51] cancer survivors she says these

[00:00:53] survivors are at higher risk for

[00:00:54] developing melanoma for breast cancer

[00:00:57] survivors that are over the age of 45

[00:00:59] they have a 12 percent increased risk

[00:01:03] for developing melanoma and that risk

[00:01:05] is 38% for breast cancer survivors that

[00:01:09] are under the age of 45 Charlotte shaft

[00:01:12] knows the dangers all too well she was

[00:01:15] diagnosed with breast cancer in April

[00:01:16] she had five tumors in her right breast

[00:01:19] soon after she had a bilateral

[00:01:21] mastectomy and shortly after that she

[00:01:24] luckily got her skin checked I actually

[00:01:27] came in and had five moles biopsied and

[00:01:32] two of them came back as I believe it's

[00:01:35] precancerous dr. Lin says these moles

[00:01:38] could have turned into melanoma if it

[00:01:40] wouldn't have been for early detection

[00:01:41] and although they don't know the direct

[00:01:44] melanoma breast cancer linked it could

[00:01:47] be underlying genetic mutations it could

[00:01:51] be environmental factors it could be

[00:01:53] behavioral factors the numbers are just

[00:01:57] too high to risk it you need to get your

[00:02:00] skin checked if you're going to get a

[00:02:01] mammogram you got to get your skin

[00:02:02] checked too it doesn't matter what

[00:02:04] pigment your skin is there can be a mole

[00:02:07] that could turn into something and it's

[00:02:09] better to be safe than sorry

[00:02:13] definitely some good advice there now

[00:02:15] dr. Lin is saying that even if you have

[00:02:17] not had breast cancer it's definitely

[00:02:19] still a good idea to get your skin

[00:02:21] checked once a year
