<\/p>

1. How Much SPF Do You Need? Is SPF 30 Enough?<\/strong><\/h3>\nFirst, Dr. Lin says no matter what type of sunscreen you choose, SPF 30 and above is a must and to use it often.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cI urge everyone to make it a habit,\u201d insists our expert. \u201cPart of your routine every morning [should be] to put on some sunscreen, regardless of whether you\u2019re going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time or not.\u201d\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2. Chemical Sunscreen<\/strong><\/h3>

Let\u2019s continue with the most common type of sunscreen: chemical-based.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cChemical sunscreen has an ingredient that is absorbed into your skin,\u201d says Dr. Lin. \u201cIt works by converting ultra-violet rays into heat.\u201d\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Dr. Lin says that it blocks what are called UVB rays \u2013 the kind that burns your skin \u2013 but you need to apply it 30 minutes before you go out, and you\u2019ll need more than you think.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cFor the sunscreen to stay effective, you need to reapply every two hours,\u201d she advises.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Chemical sunscreen comes with other benefits, too, as they are generally more water resistant, readily available, and cheaper!<\/p>

3. Mineral Sunscreen<\/strong><\/h3>

We\u2019re getting physical with the next sunscreen on our list: mineral-based, or physical sunscreen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cMineral-based sunscreens generally include one of two ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,\u201d explains Dr. Lin. \u201cThese are ingredients that are wonderful for sensitive skin.\u201d While some of these leave a chalky residue, they do work right away. \u201cYou can apply it a minute before you walk out and it is effective, as it works by reflecting the sun rays off of your skin,\u201d she adds.\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Mineral sunscreens are also broad spectrum so they can block out ultra-violet rays in the UVA and UVB range. The UVA rays are the kind that prematurely ages your skin. Dr. Lin says a good way to remember this is UVA = age, and UVB = burn.<\/p>

4. Hybrid Sunscreens<\/strong><\/h3>

We\u2019ll close out our class on sunscreen 101 with the best of both worlds: hybrid sunscreen, which is both chemical and physical. The labels on these sunscreens will say \u201cbroad spectrum\u201d. The benefit? \u201cBy combining a physical sunscreen with some of the chemical sunscreens, the consumer is more assured of having broad-spectrum protection, long-lasting protection, and water resistance,\u201d informs Dr. Lin.<\/p>
