[00:00:01] summer is here and that means we must

[00:00:04] take care of our skin sunburns they are

[00:00:06] one of the most and biggest Commons of

[00:00:09] skin issues in the state of Arizona but

[00:00:11] there are so many other common ones that

[00:00:13] you need to know about here to break

[00:00:14] down what to do to protect our skin

[00:00:16] during the summer months this is dr.

[00:00:17] Andrew Newman he is the chief

[00:00:19] dermatology resident at affiliated

[00:00:21] dermatology you said every day we need

[00:00:23] to be doing something to keep our skin

[00:00:25] safe yeah number one SPF 30 to 50

[00:00:29] sunscreen just to protect yourself from

[00:00:31] the Sun and and moisturize yeah and

[00:00:33] drink water yes so we have water out

[00:00:36] here we have a fantastic display I want

[00:00:38] to start with eczema that it what is

[00:00:40] eczema how do you treat it so eczema is

[00:00:43] one of the most common skin diseases

[00:00:45] that actually we see in our office and

[00:00:48] 10 to 20% of infants will have eczema

[00:00:51] it's something that most infants will

[00:00:55] grow out of by the time they have their

[00:00:57] 10th birthday but not all of them well

[00:00:59] their parents if they have asthma

[00:01:02] allergies or eczema the kids are more

[00:01:05] likely to have it as well it is partly

[00:01:07] hereditary all right and these are some

[00:01:09] products that you say well maybe kind of

[00:01:11] minimize some of that itching and that

[00:01:12] flaky skin mm-hmm

[00:01:13] exactly so these are dermatology trusted

[00:01:17] products that moisturize the skin which

[00:01:19] is by far the most important thing to do

[00:01:22] for treating eczema all right and these

[00:01:25] are the no nose exactly these are things

[00:01:28] we should not be doing in our home and

[00:01:30] putting on our skin right if you have

[00:01:31] that right fragrances are very

[00:01:34] irritating even the ones you don't put

[00:01:36] directly on your skin but the ones that

[00:01:38] are plugged into your wall so yeah

[00:01:41] they're very irritating the skin so you

[00:01:43] just want to avoid those it'll land on

[00:01:51] our skin all right let's talk about

[00:01:52] psoriasis what is psoriasis how is that

[00:01:55] different than eggs amah so psoriasis is

[00:01:57] actually a full-body disease even though

[00:02:00] we think of it as a skin disease it

[00:02:03] tends to affect joints it tends to

[00:02:06] affect the liver even in the heart it

[00:02:09] turns out that you have scaly thick

[00:02:11] plaques and patches

[00:02:12] is often on the scalp could be on the

[00:02:15] elbows could be on the knees and

[00:02:17] typically it's not something we cure but

[00:02:20] we manage it I'll control it all right

[00:02:23] so those were the different types of

[00:02:25] psoriasis howdy and you can treat it

[00:02:27] similar to the eczema similar there are

[00:02:31] different medicines in fact the last 10

[00:02:33] years or so there's been a huge just I

[00:02:38] guess adventure blow up of new

[00:02:41] treatments including injectables pills

[00:02:44] and even topicals everything is just

[00:02:46] completely new and exciting you guys you

[00:02:49] can help us with that all right so these

[00:02:50] are some of the other common skin

[00:02:52] conditions we can get in Arizona you saw

[00:02:54] in the tease people were itching and all

[00:02:56] of that you said there's some there's

[00:02:58] some common ones we can get just by

[00:02:59] going and enjoying a day at the lake

[00:03:01] yeah definitely so ponds lakes ocean if

[00:03:05] it's infested with a certain small

[00:03:06] parasite you can end up with what's

[00:03:09] called swimmers itch which is an itch

[00:03:12] after swimming hence the name and it's

[00:03:14] it's actually caused by the little

[00:03:16] parasites burrowing in your skin and you

[00:03:20] develop an allergic reaction to it which

[00:03:22] causes the itchiness so you want to just

[00:03:25] avoid any water contaminated with that

[00:03:28] of course so look for signs in the area

[00:03:31] okay yeah we hope with a little bit

[00:03:36] right and nonetheless you want to wash

[00:03:39] off with clean water afterwards okay

[00:03:41] what is margarita rash I love the

[00:03:43] display that you brought the way yeah so

[00:03:45] margarita rash is a fun one it's on you

[00:03:48] classically occurs after you make

[00:03:50] margaritas what happens is when lime

[00:03:53] juice will touch your skin and then you

[00:03:56] go into the Sun there's a chemical

[00:03:59] reaction that takes place on your skin

[00:04:00] with the sunlight and the lime juice and

[00:04:03] it causes a rash and so people that

[00:04:05] typically get this are people who are

[00:04:07] preparing salsas for the day or

[00:04:09] bartenders and so what you want to do is

[00:04:12] just avoid spilling lyons views on your

[00:04:15] skin and going out to the poolside in

[00:04:18] the glass not on our skin great

[00:04:20] information and you'll see the good

[00:04:21] folks that affiliated dermatology they
