How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Hair removal is a constant annoyance for many men and women alike. For patients who are tired of shaving, waxing, threading, and other temporary hair removal techniques, laser hair removal may be the solution. Laser hair therapy exposes specific areas of the body to beams of laser light that disable active hair follicles and delay or prevent re-growth. Treatment areas include:
- Extra Small Areas: lip, chin, nose, ears, navel, areola, eyebrows
- Small Areas: Underarms, bikini line, breast, sideburns, hands & fingers, feet & toes, intergluteal cleft, forehead
- Medium Areas: Lower Face, front of neck, back of neck, extended bikini, shoulders, chest, upper arms, forearms, & buttocks
- Large Areas: Upper back, lower back, back laterals, abdomen, upper legs, lower legs, and Brazilian
- Extra Large Areas: full legs, full arms, full torso, full back

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
The laser technician will go over the process and evaluate the areas you are interested in having treated, along with answering any questions that you may have. The laser technician will cleanse the areas with an alcohol wipe, mark the areas with a white eyeliner pencil and begin the laser process. There is a cooling mechanism on the tip of the laser, which will help with any discomfort that you may experience.
At the end of your appointment, the laser technician will go over any post-op care and provide you with a copy to take home with you. You may use a cool pack or cold aloe gel post-treatment to soothe any sensitive areas. Numbing agents are not used due to the cooling tip that is used on the machine.

For a diverse range of patients, laser hair removal is the safe and effective solution they’ve been searching for – a few other aesthetic treatments will save you time, effort, and expense!
One of the best ways to determine if laser hair reduction is right for you is to schedule a personalized consultation with one of our team members. However, you can also find many helpful answers to frequently asked questions below.
How long does laser hair removal take?
The process is extremely quick, with each laser pulse taking just a fraction of a second and treating up to several hair follicles. Treating several hair follicles at once means that the laser can treat about a quarter-sized area of skin per second. The laser treatment process usually takes just a couple of minutes for smaller areas, such as the upper lip.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Many different factors can affect the total number of sessions needed for laser hair removal. In general, most patients need 3-5 sessions for permanent results. We can assess your goals during your consultation appointment and advise you as to how many sessions you can expect.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most people describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against their skin for standard laser hair reduction treatments. So, while there may be some slight discomfort, it is generally tolerable.
But at Affiliated Dermatology, we utilize an innovative system known as the Soprano ICE. With this cutting-edge hair removal laser, treatments are virtually pain-free.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
The cost of laser hair removal varies widely, depending on:
- The size of the area you want to have treated
- The number of treatment sessions
Our Phoenix laser hair removal team can help you get a better idea of how much you can expect to pay for your treatment during a consultation.
It can be helpful to remember that laser hair removal is an investment, as it can end up saving you money. For example, after laser hair removal, you won’t need to spend as much on hair removal services or products such as razors, shaving cream, waxing, etc.
