A private, not-for-private organization that sets standards for U.S. graduate medical education has accredited HonorHealth and Affiliated Dermatology’s internship and dermatology residency program. This is in addition to the AOA accreditation they already have. The recognition will allow the Arizona practice to double its candidate pool by recruiting M.D’s (medical doctors) in addition to its current D.O. (osteopathic physician) candidates.

“Statistics show that physicians are more likely to stay in the cities and states where they receive residency training,” says Dr. Averitte, CEO & Managing Partner at Affiliated Dermatology. “In Arizona, demand is high for physicians treated in the care of adult and pediatric diseases of the skin and its appendages.”

The 16-month process to receive accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) involved a detailed application and several visits by inspectors who evaluated and reviewed the program.  Accreditation by ACGME provides assurance that quality standards are being met.

HonorHealth is the sponsoring institute and provides valuable experience at its hospitals while Affiliated Dermatology providers share their expertise with future physicians.  Residents must complete one year as an intern before beginning the three-year dermatology program. The program equips residents with essential skills in general dermatology, surgical dermatology and cosmetics. Affiliated Dermatology currently has 4 residents and just matched for two spots in July 2019

Throughout the accreditation process Priya Radhakrishnan, MD, CAO and Designated Institutional Office with HonorHealth, worked closely with Affiliated Dermatology’s team that included: Richard Averitte, Jr., MD and CEO; Jason Barr, DO Program Director; Genevieve Egnatios, MD Associate Program Director; Brooke Blumetti, DO, Director of Medical Education; Suzanne Murry, Director of Operations; and Bobbi Newell, Residency Program Coordinator.
