Fabulous People: Richard L. Averitte Jr

Affiliated Dermatology’s CEO and Managing Partner Dr. Richard L. Averitte Jr.

Hometown: Tallmadge, OH

First job: Akron University Club, Dishwasher Extraordinaire

Favorite AZ restaurant: Steak 44 because the wood in the bar is amazing and the food is always spectacular.

Person who has impacted your life the most: My Grandmother, Mabel, was very impactful to me because she was able to do so much with so little. She always encouraged me to “be a good person and contribute to the world.”

Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes: Being married to my wife, Marlie, for 18 years and raising triplets together has been my greatest achievement. Triplets are definitely not for the weak!

The biggest obstacle you have overcome: My medical training was the biggest obstacle I’ve overcome. Medical school, internship and residency were challenging, to say the least.

Someone who inspires you: Dale Chihuly is inspirational to me because, despite the loss of vision in one eye and aging, he has figured out ways to be productive and impart his wisdom and knowledge to others. His art will live on long beyond his life.

Favorite quote: My favorite quote is by Langston Hughes:

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: My advice to anyone interested in medicine to choose what you’re passionate, but allows you to have a full life outside of medicine.

What makes someone fabulous: What makes someone fabulous, to me, is being successful with their own style and creating their own unique signature on their craft.
