What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. The alarming uptick in the diagnosis of basal and squamous cell(non-melanoma) skin cancer means more and more people will require skin cancer treatment in the coming years.
As the fastest growing cancer in the world, about four million people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer-2.5 times more than all the other cancers combined. By 2020, experts predict that number will grow 50% to nearly six million; fueled by the Baby Boomer generation.
What Causes Skin Cancer?
The biggest cause of skin cancer is due to UV radiation from sun exposure. An increase in indoor tanning beds can be just as harmful as the sun’s rays. People with a history of skin cancer in their family can be more at risk than others. If you have light skin, eyes, and hair you are also at a higher risk of getting skin cancer.
What is Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT)?

[00:00:07] skin cancer it is the most common of all
[00:00:09] cancers and it accounts for nearly half
[00:00:12] of all cancers here in the United States
[00:00:14] here to explain prevention and ways to
[00:00:16] treat skin cancer is dr. Christine Lin
[00:00:19] she's the chief of staff at affiliated
[00:00:20] dermatology great to have you here such
[00:00:23] an important topic as we are in these
[00:00:24] triple digits right now what is skin
[00:00:26] cancer and how can we prevent it skin
[00:00:29] cancer is the most common cancer in the
[00:00:32] United States more people are diagnosed
[00:00:35] with skin cancer than all other cancers
[00:00:37] combined one in five Americans will
[00:00:40] develop skin cancer sometime in their
[00:00:43] life a huge statistic one in five yes
[00:00:46] and well how can we prevent it what do
[00:00:47] we need to be doing daily the major
[00:00:49] cause of skin cancer is ultraviolet
[00:00:53] radiation exposure from the Sun so using
[00:00:57] some protection is the most important
[00:01:00] thing that includes using sunscreen
[00:01:03] wearing some protective clothing seeking
[00:01:06] shade and of course regular visits to
[00:01:09] your dermatologist for skin examination
[00:01:11] right and we and you said we need to do
[00:01:13] that regularly go in and get our whole
[00:01:15] body scanned yet make sure that we don't
[00:01:17] have any lesions you all at affiliated
[00:01:19] dermatology you offer what's called
[00:01:21] superficial radiation therapy or SRT
[00:01:24] what is that superficial radiation
[00:01:27] therapy is a non-surgical treatment
[00:01:30] option for non-melanoma skin cancers and
[00:01:34] that includes basal cell carcinoma and
[00:01:37] squamous cell carcinoma superficial
[00:01:40] radiation therapy works by delivering a
[00:01:43] calibrated precise dose to the skin
[00:01:46] surface it penetrates only skin deep
[00:01:49] so nearby tissue and underlying muscle
[00:01:53] and bone are not affected that's huge
[00:01:55] for patients absolutely and the
[00:01:58] wonderful thing is using superficial
[00:02:02] radiation therapy patients can avoid
[00:02:04] having anesthesia having any cutting or
[00:02:09] bleeding or risk of infection
[00:02:12] and they can continue to go about their
[00:02:15] active lifestyle without interruption
[00:02:17] right so those are the benefits for
[00:02:18] people who've had you know the
[00:02:20] alternative to this there's no downtime
[00:02:22] in this it sounds like you're just
[00:02:23] treating yes your cancer cells that's
[00:02:26] correct
[00:02:27] that's incredible all right so what kind
[00:02:29] of patient expect when they come there
[00:02:31] to affiliated dermatology
[00:02:32] what can they expect during a treatment
[00:02:34] so the treatment protocol will depend on
[00:02:37] the particular skin cancer and the size
[00:02:41] but the typical treatment course will
[00:02:44] involve several treatments a week for
[00:02:46] several weeks in a row and over the up
[00:02:49] here at a time the skin cancer cells
[00:02:52] will be slowly treated and slough off
[00:02:55] and the eventual result will be a just a
[00:03:00] very minimal scarring which is what
[00:03:02] we're looking at so this is a cancer
[00:03:04] patient who had skin cancer on the hand
[00:03:06] and and this is the treatment process
[00:03:08] look at the end there you can't that's
[00:03:10] correct
[00:03:11] so yes so this is a particular this
[00:03:14] particular skin cancer was a squamous
[00:03:17] cell carcinoma on the hand and on the
[00:03:19] hand after surgery we typically expect
[00:03:21] patients to have to really take it easy
[00:03:24] so that they don't pop their sutures and
[00:03:27] cause issues with the surgical site
[00:03:29] healing with SRT treatment this patient
[00:03:33] was able to continue with all their
[00:03:36] day-to-day activities and continue to
[00:03:38] play golf without any interruption and
[00:03:41] the end result as you can see there is
[00:03:44] very minimal scarring let's look at the
[00:03:46] leg another patient also look at you
[00:03:48] can't even see the lesion at all that's
[00:03:50] absolutely right
[00:03:51] in this particular case this particular
[00:03:53] skin cancer is on the lower extremity of
[00:03:56] an elderly woman who has poor
[00:03:59] circulation which usually means surgery
[00:04:02] would put them at risk for delayed wound
[00:04:05] healing and infection and treating it
[00:04:09] with SRT she was able to continue with
[00:04:13] her activities and treating the skin
[00:04:16] cancer cells slowly over time to leave
[00:04:19] with very minimal scarring Wow huge
